The New
York State Ornithological Association (formerly the Federation
of New York State Bird Clubs) has conducted a statewide
waterfowl count each January since 1955. Since
1960, the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club has covered Dutchess. The
winter waterfowl count is held for a period of one week.
Volunteers team up to scan the Hudson River as well as
inland waterways, lakes, and ponds.
Otis
Waterman was the club's first waterfowl count coordinator,
serving from 1960 to 1976, followed by Alice Jones from
1977 to 1988, Helen Manson from 1990 to 1996, and Barbara
Butler since 1997.
