| January 2010 Records
Cold, snowy weather marked the first half of January, freezing up nearly all lakes and ponds, plus the Hudson. The “January thaw” lasted most of the latter half of the month with a high of 60 on the 25th. Yet many ponds remained closed due to nightly drops below freezing. Abel’s Pond, near my home, froze before Christmas Census. It had a little open water by late January, but no ducks or geese noticed. Waterfowl reports are sparse, but don’t include the Waterfowl Count results (reported in Wings Over Dutchess). Several birds were more numerous after mid-month, including Kingfisher and blackbirds.
