Birding at "Vail"

by Ed Spaeth

Put aside those wintertime blues and go to the outback where there is at least an "½ mile" network of groomed packed powder trails through the Vail at Squirrel Run of 4-foot snow drifts to seed feeders, suet feeders and corn cob cribs.  We have them all.  Birds of various species; Crows, Blue Jays, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, bright red Cardinals, Tufted Titmice, White-breasted Nuthatches, Dark-eyed Juncoes, Black-capped Chickadees, sparrows, and finches.  An occasional Sharp-shinned Hawk might appear as well. Hear, what I hear--A cacophonous symphony of light chirps, squawks and caws.  See, what I see---birds of all manner of feathers and what you can do with all that duct tape you bought for terrorist attacks. Why, convert Clementine crates into miniature covered feeders, that's what to do with the duct tape.......Enjoy winter and the mother of all snowstorms.....Hug your snow shovel or snow blower, but keep your binoculars handy!....
