Jesse
Jaycox of NYSDEC found a Wilson's Snipe nest in the town of North
East with four eggs on May 4, 2000 and photographed it on May 9.
By May 25, the eggs had hatched, but one nestling was dead. Dutchess
is at the southern edge of the Wilson's Snipe breeding range. We
have few summer sightings of them. This is only the third confirmed
nesting in the county. The previous ones were in 1936 (a nest with
4 eggs found in Wassaic) and 1962 (an adult and 3 young found in
Wingdale).
