Barbara
Butler reported: "The Saturday (July 8, 2006) field
trip to Greig Farm found Horned Larks, Vesper, Grasshopper, and
Savannah Sparrows, in numbers and with young. Walk on the farm
road that goes between Rockefeller and Pitcher Lanes. Look in
the dirt for the Horned Larks and find the sparrows perched on
tall weeds, posts or raspberry bushes. Take a scope, if you have
one, for closeup looks. Please stay on the farm roads and out
of the fields. (Then stop to pick some blueberries at Greig's
u-pick-it place on Pitcher Lane.)"
Previously,
in mid-June 2005, Breeding
Bird Atlas workers found several Vesper Sparrows at Greig Farm
in Red Hook. On a follow-up trip July 2, Barbara Michelin
and Barbara Butler found a young bird and two adults. The
photos below were taken by Steve Golladay at Greig Farm on August
15, 2005.

Note the "distinctive
chestnut lesser coverts" (National Geographic
Field Guide to the Birds of North America).
In this photo they are visible in the part of the
wing that is covering the tip of the bird's bill.
Thanks to Steve for capturing this field mark that
is seldom seen!
