Sedge Wren
New Paltz, May-June 2004

Christine Guarino found a Sedge Wren on May 16, 2004 in New Paltz.  Several RTWBC members have gone to see and photograph the bird.  The sighting was first reported on NYBIRDS and updates are being posted there.  The bird was last reported seen on Sunday June 6.

The bird is most vocal and visible in the early morning.  See below for directions.  Please stay on the path.

Directions:  From NYS Thruway, take New Paltz exit 18 (there are Purple Martins here across the way from the Park 'n' Ride) and turn Left onto 299 …Go through town (lots of traffic from midday on) and turn Right onto Huguenot Street (at Gilded Otter Brewpub)...Shortly after you pass the driveway for Town and Country Condos, turn Left into a parking area/driveway.  Park in the main, paved parking area and walk past the sewage treatment plant.

Here you will have the Wallkill River on your left and the gardens on your right. There are birds in this area in the trees bordering the River. You will see a faint trail in the grass adjacent to the River heading northish...follow this trail into the woods and it will split to the right a few times...it doesn't matter which split you take, as long as you ultimately head right at the wooden pedestrian bridge…don't go over this bridge….turn right before it...
you will reach a "T".  Turn *left* at this "T".  Then go over a mucky trickle on a dirt bridge and bear right...make sure to keep the water close on your right now...don't take any left forks...(it's not the Wallkill anymore but swampy yuk) and proceed down the grassy trail…I spotted the wren because he was singing a lot on the left in the field near marker labeled Huguenot Path 21 (sign is tough to read - it's a 4x4" post /faded vertical writing). There is a path near this marker that you can take to get a little closer to the wren. This morning (5/24) he was singing on both sides of this path, but I was hesitant to get too close to him. If you continue past the wren and reach another wooden ped bridge, you can take it back to Huguenot Street and walk back to your car from there if you'd like.
