Red-throated Loon
Millerton, November 1992, Millbrook, November 2003, local lakes November 2005 & November 2006

Photos by Dotty Fleury and Alan Peterson

Red-throated Loons are found in Dutchess County only a few times per decade, normally in winter plumage. This one was photographed on November 23, 1992 by Dot Fleury on a small pond in Millerton. It was only seen for one day.

More recently, on November 18, 2003 Alan Peterson found a Red-throated Loon on a small (1-2 acre) pond at Thorndale Farm in Millbrook.  The loon was still present on November 21.  According to Alan, the loon was on "a very small pond, and the bird may not be able to lift off.  A dozen beagles came to drink from the pond, and it just dove."

Carena Pooth and Herb Thompson observed two Red-throated Loons on Sylvan Lake around noon on Sunday November 13, 2005.  Barbara Butler followed up with a visit to the lake and saw one of these birds around 2pm the same day and several other people saw them also.

A Red-throated Loon was observed on Sylvan Lake in November 2006. After the loon left Sylvan Lake, one of the same species (possibly the same bird) was found on Whaley Lake.
