Norrie Point and Madam Brett Park, March - April 2003, Stissing Lake, November 2006

After hearing many reports of RED-NECKED GREBE in the northeast (including on the Hudson River both north and south), Dutchess County finally had a report when Jeff Lucas called in his sighting the afternoon of Friday March 28 and a number of other birders went to see it that day.  Jeff found the bird at Norrie Point, near the bridge at the cove close to the marina.  The bird was seen again on Saturday March 29 by several other birders.  On Friday April 4 a Red-necked Grebe was again seen there.  On Wednesday April 23 a Red-Necked Grebe was reported once again at the same location.

Sue Infante found two RED-NECKED GREBES at Madam Brett Park in Beacon around the beginning of April.  These two birds were last reported seen on Wednesday April 16.

November 2006:  From Barbara Butler: For several days, two Red-necked Grebes have been seen at Stissing Lake. Stissing Lake is the one to the north of Thompson Pond. The grebes are usually seen on the southern part of the lake. Red-necked Grebes are seen in Dutchess County more often in the spring, but there are a few fall records. These aren't particularly rare here, but this pair is easy to find for now. The grebes were last reported seen 11/27.

Directions to Stissing Lake: Head for Thompson Pond by going north on Rt 82. As you enter Pine Plains, turn left onto Lake Road. The firehouse is on that corner. Before you get to Thompson Pond, look at the lake on your right. That's Stissing Lake. The grebes have been seen from here.
