10/4/06...Please
note that this bird was not reported again after
9/29/06 in spite of heavy searching for it.
9/29/06...From
Barbara Michelin via the RTWBC mailing list: Allan and I went to Milford
Point, CN today to see a Wheatear reported there. The following is his post to Mid-Hudson
Birds and NYSBIRDS:
A
Northern Wheatear was easily observed today by my wife Barbara
and I from 1:15 to 2:15 PM at Milford Point, CT at the Connecticut
Audubon Center, at the outer viewing platform. The bird was
in non-breeding plumage and viewed at a distance of 100 to
120 feet. I would like to thank Nick Bonomo of Connecticut
Audubon for allowing us super close looks through his scope.
Directions
to Milford Pt. may be found at the following link: http://www.ctaudubon.org/visit/milford.htm
If
you make the chase, please follow the directions below once
you are at the Connecticut Audubon Center. Take the beach trail
south of the center towards LI sound.
Follow
the beach westward towards the point, and you will find yourself
in front of the last few houses on the point. Soon after
you pass the final house you will see a large sign on your
right for the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.
From this point onward, the beach side of the point is CLOSED
TO EVERYONE, but the marsh side of the point is open to birders
and fishermen alike. Follow the short trail in front of the
NWR sign, which crosses over to the marsh; located here is
the "outer platform"
referred to in the Wheatear report. Please try to stay below
the high tide line, and minimize your time spent in front of
the houses themselves. Please respect all private and restricted
property.
