A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was reported by Rich Guthrie in Montgomery County, west of Albany, on the NYSBIRDS-L mailing list on January 24. The bird had reportedly been at this location for about four weeks already. It was last reported seen on Sunday March 30. Reportedly the owl was NOT seen on April 3.  The photo at left was taken on Sunday January 26.

Note from Matthew Young (on NYSBIRDS-L):   "This bird was initially found by the Chuck and Ellen Kieweg, members of the Hoffman Bird Club of Pittsfield, MA. The Kiewegs were kind enough to share word of their discovery with the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club from whence word went out on NYBIRDS. Many folks are saying thanks to the Kiewegs."

Directions: Take Taconic Parkway north to the end and then take I-90 west to I-88. Take I-88 to Rte 20 and then take Rte 20 west. After you drive through the hamlet of Sloansville, take County Rte 7A (Corbin Hill Rd.) north about 1.6 miles. Just after crossing the Montgomery County line in the town of Root, look for a 3/10 mile marker along the road. The bird was seen on both sides of the road from this location and vicinity. It has spend much time in the tree in front of the farmhouse at the top of this hill.
The trip is about 2 hours and 15 minutes starting from the intersection of the Taconic and Route 55.
