Horned Lark
Poughkeepsie, April 1961
Photos by Walter Claire, Jr.

On April 2, 1961, Walter Claire, Jr. found a female Horned Lark incubating 3 eggs on a nest located in the grassy area between the IBM Main Plant and US Route 9.  Two eggs hatched April 10, but the third egg was missing.  Two young appeared well on April 14 but were not searched for again until April 17 and were not found then or later.  Horned Larks had been known to breed in the same area in 1941, but had not been known there since that time.  No nesting Horned Larks have been seen there since the 1961 record.
