Great Cormorant
Upper Kay's Pond, Pleasant Valley, November 2006

From Barbara Butler on 11/29/06: "This afternoon I found a first year Great Cormorant on Upper Kay's Pond, aka Drake Lake.... that big pond on Netherwood Road at Gretna Road. I noticed a big dark bird perched on the island, low over the water. As I drove by the white belly was noticable. So I turned around and checked it out with my scope. The belly was light all the way down. The yellow on the bill was not as extensive as on a Double-crested Cormorant. Only under the eye, not above it, nor did the yellow extend into the beak. We have a very few records of Great Cormorants along the river. This is the first "inland" record that I know of. Great Cormorants have been becoming more common in the region over the last several years." The bird was last reported seen 12/16/06.
