| Most
years the first Chipping Sparrow arrives during the first
two weeks of April, with the full complement in place by
mid-April. Most Chipping Sparrows depart in October
but a few linger into November. One spent the winter,
January 1 to March 5, 2002
at Carena Pooth's window feeder in Poughquag. It was
an unusual but well-studied and photographed winter resident.
Historical
Notes: There were no winter records until the winter
of 1966-67, when Marion Van Wagner found one at her feeder
in Pleasant Valley on December 20,
1966 and January 3, 1967.
One spent the winter (December 15,
1981 through March 1982) at Vaughn Morrison's feeder
in Chelsea Ridge, and Florence Germond hosted an immature
from January 8 through March 1984
in the Town of Washington.
