Black Scoter

Photos by Davis Finch and Carena Pooth

This species was reported yearly during the 1970s, then every other year during the 1980s.  However, there have been only two sightings since the 1980s:  35 birds at Quaker Lake in Pawling on Oct. 28, 2001 (found by Carena Pooth and Herb Thompson; photographed by Carena Pooth, right); and 30 at the end of October 1990 at Tamarack (Bontecou Lake).

Before 1990, flocks of 20 to 200 birds were normally seen on the Hudson River, with single birds reported from lakes. They were seen more often in fall, and generally between late October and early November.

The photos below show a juvenile Black Scoter that was found dead (apparently shot) at Vanderburgh Cove Nov. 16, 1970 by Davis Finch.
