Blue-headed Vireo
Nesting again in Dutchess County

Blue-headed Vireos were considered common transients until the first
nest in Dutchess County was discovered on June 8, 1922 in Turkey Hollow.
Additional nest sites were soon discovered but the Blue-headed Vireo may
not have continued nesting.  They were recorded on only one-third of the
May Censuses between 1930 and 1958.  June and July records reappear from 1968 at locations where they currently nest.  However, it was not until June 11, 1988 at Thompson Pond that a recent nest was actually found, by Vivian Parkhurst.

The juvenile Blue-headed Vireo at right was photographed on a Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club field trip to Deep Hollow on June 12, 2002
