Baird's Sandpiper
Sharon Station, May 31 - June 1, 1979

Photos by Mary Yegella

Three Baird's Sandpipers were seen from May 31 to June 1, 1979 at Sharon Station.  The birds were found by Trixi Strauss, Helen Manson, and Eleanor Pink, and were seen by many.  This was the fifth sighting in Dutchess County, the first in spring, indeed the first substantiated spring record for New York State and possibly the entire Northeast. A report was submitted to NYSARC and accepted.

Baird's Sandpipers migrate generally in small groups or singly through the center of the continent to and from their northern Canada breeding grounds. However, in the fall, some juveniles follow the coast south.
